Tackling Climate Change Together

Surrey

Sustainability and positive action to reduce CO2 emissions are priorities for many councils in Surrey and across the South East. Through a series of work streams, this project will help local authorities to build capacity to address climate change National Indicators and the wider challenges of the Climate Change Act targets and priorities. It will achieve this through joined up working, promotion, mentoring and the sharing of best practice throughout the region, with the aim of establishing a Surrey wide approach for greater improvement and efficiency, as well as offering a better experience for residents.

What did we set out to achieve?

• Establish joint working and share good practice throughout the South East region, to build capacity in order to contribute to regional targets such as the South East Renewable Energy Target within the South East Plan (10% by 2010), the Regional Economic Strategy and Re-Energising the South East.
• Build capacity to address climate change National Indicators at a local level (key Surrey Local Area Agreement priorities) and to meet the wider challenges of climate change adaptation in the region, positively contributing to the Climate Change Act targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through domestic and international action by 80 per cent by 2050 against a 1990 baseline.

What have we achieved so far?

• Produced Surrey-wide Climate Change Strategy.
• Established Surrey Climate Change Partnership officer group and Surrey Climate Change Partnership Member Group.
• Established a climate change adapatation sub-group, to share good practice and enable consistent reporting towards the four local climate change National Indicators, 185, 186, 187 and 188.
• Developed training and development plan for Members and delivered initial awareness sessions with the Energy Saving Trust.
• Engaged with regional and national partners to drive work forward.

How can your council benefit?

Future areas of activity include further research into climate change adaptation, sustainable transport and Surrey-wide energy saving projects.
