Green Garden Waste Project

Surrey

The key objective of this project is to investigate the possibility of sharing garden waste processing services across Surrey authorities. The project aims to support the delivery of Local Area Agreement (LAA) target NI192 (% of waste recycling and composting). By joining up back office garden waste processing across Surrey authorities, the project aims to create greater efficiencies, generated by economies of scale, and enhance customer’s experiences.

What did we set out to achieve?

• Greater efficiency resulting from a shared processing system rather than duplicating the approach within every Borough and District.
• Economies of scale (potential to bulk buy discounts possible for containers and composters).
• Enhanced customer experience.
• More agile approach to promotion and income generation.
• Template for other organisations to use.
• Shared learning and greater trust/ experience between Surrey authorities.

What have we achieved so far?

• The project team have just developed its business case and had it signed off by the Surrey Improvement Partnership Board.

How can your council benefit?

The next months will see work progress to develop an in depth understanding of the administrative and management processes involved with garden waste in each authority. A review of the associated information management technology and its potential to be managed by or integrated with another organisation will also be assessed.

The next stage will be based around the assessment of options and the development of project plans and the principles of partnership working, along with the associated documents and processes for governance.
